F12 locking RPC running Risc OS 3.7

Post by Michael Ch » Fri, 24 Sep 2004 23:19:59

I've a problem that I have had for quite some time, probably over a year
now, but it is now beginning to really wind me up so I wonder if anyone is
having the same problem.

Basically, when you click on F12 to go to the command line, most times the
star command appears just under the icon bar as normal and I can enter
anything via the command line and then pressing enter again returns you to
the desktop.

Sometimes however, when pressing F12, instead of the small white area
appearing with the star command, I get the underline character flashing at
the bottom left hand side of the icon bar and the machine is stuffed at
that point. It isn't in the command line because no matter what I press it
doesn't register and it's not in the desktop because I can click on any
items with the mouse and again nothing registers.

All I can do at this point is reboot the machine.

Any ideas anyone? The reason it is getting annoying is that the backspace
key is far too near F12 for my chubby fingers. The problem occurs whether I
purposely hit the F12 key or accidently.

Thanks

Michael

Have you got Scroll Lock turned on when this happens? It certainly produces
the effect you describe on my machine.

John, you are a marvel!

(Really wish I'd asked that a long time ago!)

Thanks again,

In article < XXXX@XXXXX.COM >,

Does F12 with Scroll-lock on produce a different keyboard code? (NOt
sure that that's te correct terminolgy.) Surely it'd be easy for
someone to come up with a patch that makes RO ignore that code, or
possibly treat it as a normal F12?

< XXXX@XXXXX.COM >:

I don't think so -- it just prevents the screen from scrolling once F12 is
pressed.

If someone wanted to write a patch, they could write something to disable
Scroll Lock completely. I think I use it at most once a year, and I'm a
(extremely unproductive) programmer.

My problem is that I have a Belkin Omnicube switch box to switch my
keyboard and monitor between my RPC and PC and the keypress for swapping is
hitting the scroll lock button twice and then either 1 or 2

[Snip] Scroll lock disabling

There's an application on my website called !NumOn which switches the Num
Lock on and the Scroll Lock off every second. Whether that would prevent
the switch box from working I don't know.

Thanks Ian.

It seems to work as it doesn't affect the belkin as the two keypresses on
the scroll lock are done in quick succession (ie under one second).

Cheers.

[snip]

Scroll Lock On, F12 is a useful simple way of preventing people from
using your machine whilst you're AFK.

Not ultimatly secure but it foxes the majority of people.

Ages ago (when some bright sparks at school discovered they could lock up the
entire IT suite by going around pressing Scroll Lock & F12...) I wrote an app
to turn Scroll Lock off whenever it detects F12 being pressed in the desktop.
For what it's worth, I've stuck it at:
