This is the message I'm repeatedly getting:

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at indium.smartgroups.com.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

< XXXX@XXXXX.COM >:
Sorry, no mailbox here by that name. (#5.1.1)

I have been getting problems with the indium server almost since the group
was set up! It's one reason why I decided to endorse pv's attempts at
setting up an independant server for the list.

I've just sent a test post to the group to make sure that it is still
alive and well.

I'm not holding my breath. I just fired off another complaint/tech report
on the subject, since my test post never came back. Sounds like a server
is possibly down, but between that and a number of members being shut out
for reasons that beggar belief, it's my thought that SG will need to
review its modus operandii pdq or they will lose custom altogether! Think
of all that luvverly ad money they stand to lose!

Smartgroups seem to have totally stuffed up their entire system, I can't send
to any of the groups I'm on - the ones they haven't already deleted without
warning.

Once upon a time Smartgroups was independent, and was superbly managed by a
team including a prominent RISC OS user, with never more than a few minutes
down time in the early hours of the morning, and real email support address.

They they got bought by Freeserve and when the original management left, they
shifted the whole lot to whatever stinking hole they live in, and proceeded
to break it requring several downtime periods of 6 to 10 days. They then got
rid of the support address replacing it with freeserves universally despised
"you are an idiot who does know how to use Outlook Express FAQ" automated
response system.

Now Freeserve has been taken over by Wanadoo, they are probably attempting in
a completely cack handed way to rebrand it Wanadoo groups, and have finally
sent the system to hell in handbasket.

If anyone runs a smartgroup, time to take it elsewhere.

I've not received any messages from SmartGroups mailing lists for a couple
of days now.

Whatever happened to the old majordomo system that worked so well for
many years? Do we really have to join in the American Way and be
dominated and messed around by what are, after all, only massive
advertising outfits that are interested only in making megabucks?

I'd rather boycott the lot of 'em if it's still possible.

Indeed. All you need to run a mailing list is a mail server and the
appropriate software, such as Mailman (<URL: http://www.yqcomputer.com/ ;). It's
really the work of but a moment to set such things up.
