A1200 and 3.5" Hard Drive

Post by p_rynhar » Mon, 05 Apr 2004 06:34:17

Hi

I am trying to upgrade the 2.5" 40MB hard disk on my A1200.

I have purchased a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adapter and I have plugged in a
Quantum 4.3 GB hard disk drive. I've checked that the IDE pin order is
correct.

When I turn on the computer I get two Hard Disk light flashes and then
nothing (except a dark screen).

The drive is currently PC formatted (FAT32), which the Amiga will not
like! I was hoping to boot into Workbench using floppies and then
format the drive from there. However, even if I hold down both mouse
buttons at boot time, or insert floppies, I still get the two Hard
Disk seeks and then nothing.

Is this problem due to the Drive being PC formatted ? If so how can I
prepare the drive ?

Regards

Patrick

If you can boot from floppies, with the HD connected, then you have to use
some utility such as HDToolBox (on the Install floppy disk) so that the
Amiga can properly recognize it. After that, you will be able to format the
hard disk.

A1200 and 3.5" Hard Drive

Hello,

how does the HD get its power?
I've already seen an adapter 2,5" to 3,5"
that supplies the 3,5" HD out of the 2,5" connector.
This might be to weak.
Also the power supply might be not strong enough
depending on the HD.

Ciao

Gunnar

Double check the cable! Plugging it in the wrong way is a common error...
It doesn't matter what is on the drive, it should show up as non-dos.

Hi

Thank you for your replies.

I can't get the computer to boot using floppies when the drive plugged
in. It appears that it reads the boot sector from the drive, but then
seems to "hang". The drive is set up as a Master and it is Quantum
Fireball CR 4.3GB.

The Hard Drive is getting its power from a separate PC AT Power
Supply. I tried plugging in a CD-Rom drive and it played an Audio CD
fine, so I assume it has enough power for a hard drive also.

I'm not to sure what the problem could be. The computer boots fine
from the 2.5" drive. I will try removing the FAT32 partition using
'fdisk' on a PC.

Regards

Patrick

The `above` is a rough diagram of my 2.5/3.5 adapter on my A600, that also
has wire1(red) cut (reset line) which could be one of your problems.

I`ve also removed the master/slave jumpers from both the harddrive and the
adapter.
