Bad Return key on A500. Easy to fix?

the return key on my A500 does not work. If I press real *** the key
for a few seconds it sometimes works. Can this be fixed easily?

Generally fairly easily, though it's a bit hard to tell without actually
looking at it. Usually it means the contact pad has worn away or has *** on
it. Cleaning the contact pad is easy enough, you just need to disasssemble
the keyboard and clean using some *** and a swab. If the pad is worn
away or trace cracked, using a conducting marker pen like this or similar

Not sure how long that fix would last though.
Alternatively, swap the whole keyboard for a working one ;-)

maybe you could also try 'liquid silver' its VERY expensive, but you
need just small amount. its also used in cars for repairing rear
window heater so you'll easily find it

Getting another A500 to break for spares is almost certainly cheaper.
Outside of the fantasy economy of eBay, you can't give away an A500,
A600 or A1200 round here as pretty much every attic in the country
already has one.

If I push real *** the key it works a little. If a trace was bad would
this happen? I think this might just be a dirty connection.

What do you guys think???

Thanks

I have tried that myself with several Amigas. BUT, there were
different version, revisions.. of A500 so the keyboard is NOT
identical and it doesn't fit nicely the case (moves around a bit)
and they can have different LEDs, keys, etc..

I heard that it could be possible to use ordinary graphite pen (very
soft, B6) but I wouldn't reccomend it.

that 'liquid silver' is sold in small bottles (5 grams) so its not
that expensive. It really depends on how much is that particular Amiga
important to him. He probably knows that the easiest/fastest thing is
to dump it and get another one without having to repair/replace
anything.

Just do NOT use graphite 33 spray.

Slight differences in revisions but the keyboards can be freely swapped
between them.

Doesn't last.

That's another option. When I tried to sell an A500 setup locally I couldn't
get more then $30 for a very nice setup complete with A590, A520, quality
mouse and digitizer. That's life.

Most are headed for landfill these days :-(

Don't know did you? ;)

I will play with it this weekend. I think since it does kinda work it would
be a matter of cleaning the contacts. I shall find out this weekend and
report back.

Ok I found out the problem. It's the *** plunger that is bad.
Apparently they loose their conductivity after time and this is the cause of
the key not working. I swapped it out from the Tilde key "~" and the return
key works perfectly now! I guess I need to find another *** plunger to
get the ~ working but atleast I can use the RETURN key now.

Thanks everyone,
Tim
