Lacie USB 2.0 external drive, grinding away when not mounted

Anyone know what causes this, I use a Lacie USB 2.0 250GByte external
drive with my linux laptop (RedHat Fedora core 3 on thinkpad T41).
This is not linux related because the weird behavior is going on when
it's not even mounted. If the lacie drive is powered up but not mounted
I can hear the head actively grinding away constantly, if I do mount
it to linux, the drive instantly quiets down. In fact, my current fix
is to mount it. Is it bad for these drives to be powered up but not
mounted? What I'm hearing is probably some kind of calibration cycle
that's done by the firmware but it goes on way too long. The Lacie
drive does run pretty hot but I'm using it as Lacie intended (it's
flat on a table with no obstructions around it, it should be getting
air. I used to run it with my tower box, that situation ran it much
cooler because I placed the drive behind the box so the power supply
fan was blowing on the External Usb drive. Now with the laptop there's
no fan available so it's just convection cooled.
