Sony CDRW on Intel 865 PERL

Post by Richard St » Sun, 18 Jan 2004 20:10:15

I have had a system running for some time

Intel 865 PERL Bios P12
Dual SATA Maxtor HD on RAID
Dual 256 MB DDR
9600 Pro Graphics

Win XP Pro SP 1
Sony CRX 300A CDRW-DVD Rom
Ahead Nero 5.5.017 Bundled

Everything is fine including reading CD / DVD

But occassionaly when I start to burn a CDR the whole system reboots - but
not every time!

The reboot only happens when firing up Nero - and only after going past the
initial screen. But on other occasions it burns just fine. Doesn't depend on
how many other windows I have open.

Anyone else have this - and any advice please.

Richard

Richard Struthers, in all wisdom, typed:
<snip>

Maybe it's time for a Nero driver update? They're up to 5.5.10.54 now. I'm
guessing you have a typo and really meant to say "Nero 5.5.10.17"

Current updates for Nero 5.5 are available here:
http://www.yqcomputer.com/

Nero has a page on causes of crashes here, but it's really out of date:

Nero 5.5 does NOT work with HyperThreading enabled.

Gee that is a shock as I have hyperthreading on my machine enabled and I
have never had a problem with Nero yet.

Worked on mine with no problems.

For the original poster, have you got the automatic reboot on error
turned on in the system properties? I'd start by turning that off so
the machine will stay up when Nero does error out.

And have you turned off the imapi services in XP? It's been a while
since I've had the problem, but if Nero and XP's imapi services are
interacting, that could be generating a system error causing the
reboot.

Lastly, I'd look at re-installing Nero.

Updated Nero and hasn't crashed on last two burns but it was intermittent.

Disabled auto-reboot - in my naiive way thought XP might give me a BSOD to
help me out.

Thanks
