? fitting bigger IDE to Compaq contura ?

Post by news » Mon, 23 Apr 2007 12:57:38

My old Compaq contura aero 4/33c has got a nice LCD display,
for reading stuff which I've accumulated, when I travel.

Because the original IDE fitted is now full, I'd like to replace/add
a new big one.

As I remember I can't get it to do like a standard PC to IDE autodetect;
so I'd need to clone the existing IDE to the first partition of the new &
bigger IDE. But this would still be problematic if the new IDE had
different cylinders, heads ?

I'm told that most laptops have 2 slots. In which case I'd just be able
to install linux ...etc. to the 2nd IDE. But would the power supply
handle it ?

If it's only got one IDE slot, I'd have to buy an adaptor to copy the
original IDE's initialisation stuff.

Is this whole exercise unrealistic ?

Thanks for any info,

== Chris Glur.

I have an old Compaq LTE Elite
that works on a 15.GB HDD
with Win98SE, i got the HD to work by using Ontrack DiskManager,
maybe that can work for you...

Very, very few laptops can take two internal drives.

The exercise is not unrealistic but may take some work, and more son on
a Compaq than on some other models that are more generic.
