Security and an Ad Hoc Wireless Network

Security and an Ad Hoc Wireless Network

I want to set up a simple, ad hoc wireless network between my Compaq
Presario R3000 laptop and my desktop in which I plan to install a
wireless PCI card.(802.11g) and am concerned about security. Both
machines run XP and its firewall. This is my first venture into the
world of wi-fi so I really need to know what I can do to approach the
level of security I now have using a cable between the two machines.

From reading almost everything I can find on the web and understanding
little of it, I think what I need to do is install Wireless Equivalent
Privacy and increase the encryption but I haven't a clue about to do
this. There doesn't appear to be any tab or check box for it in the
Compaq's Wireless Connection Property dialog.

If I have to go the router route (heh, heh) that is ok but I would
prefer, for now, to use an ad hoc setup since only two machines are
involved.

Thank you for any help or hints on this.

Jack,
The WEP and encryption is set up in a wireless access point or wireless
router. Either device will also allow for establishing an ADHOC wireless
network.

This link is one of many to get you started.

Good luck!

Security and an Ad Hoc Wireless Network

OK, Henry. Thank you. I guess that says that I will not be able to use
it if I go from the wireless NIC in the compaq to the one in the desktop
so I will probably go out and buy a router when I get the wireless NIC
for the desktop. No big deal, I would probably wind up with one anyway
sometime shortly.

Good link; thank you again.
