Print server for HP printer on Mac OS9 wireless network?

Post by Paul Jacks » Mon, 21 Feb 2005 14:45:33

I recently set up a friend with broadband on a wireless network using a
Netgear WGR614 attached to her Motorola Cable modem.

She uses a couple of portable Macs (1 Powerbook + 1 iBook) running OS
9.22 to access the network from around her house.

She also has a HP all-in-one type printer and would like to hook it up
to the network so she can access it wirelessly (Currently she has to
physically link up via USB whenever she want to print)

All of the print server type products i've seen seem to require Windows
to work so i'm kind of stumped about how to implement the remote printer
access in this situation.

Her printer is close to the wireless router and so could be directly
linked to it via Ethernet cable or wirelessly, whatever works.

If anyone knows a way to achieve this setup I would be grateful for any
suggestions on implementation and hardware required.

TIA!

Well, I think that is what Aiport Extreme does : sharing network and USB
printer connections, but that means you can sell her WGR614...

Unfortunately AFAIK it requires OS X to do printer serving and she wants
to stick with OS 9 (for now)(can't afford to upgrade her many OS 9 apps).

Most modern print servers can be configured using either Telnet or a Web
interface, so why should it not work for Macs?

The only point is that many WLAN routers and print servers don't know
how to handle the AppleTalk protocol. So if your friend is using the
printer with Apple's LaserWriter software or Adobe's equivalent
PSPrinter, she should configure it to print via TCP/IP protocol.

In article <421898e1$0$16321$ XXXX@XXXXX.COM >, Jacky Bendayan

I have a note from one tour of local computer outlets that says,

"D-Link DP-300, 2xparallel, 1xseries, Mac/Win/etc"

I was looking for a print server for an HP LaserJet at the time...
