ibook wakekup takes 30 minutes

My ibook on wakeup sometimes (~50-50 chance) thrashes the disk at an
approximately one second period. This goes on for around half an hour
and during this interval the cursor can be moved and the Apple menu
will respond very slowly. If I wait long enough this strange behavior
ceases and every thing works perfectly.

I had this same problem about six months ago. I tried all sorts of
things to fix it and none of them seemed to work. After a while it
seemed fix itself! It continued work just fine until a few days ago.
Any ideas?

It might be a network (DNS?) problem, and the 10.3.7 update may fix
it. Good luck!

an
hour
behavior
ago.
I don't think so because now it is afflicted with boot-up problems.
Sometimes the disk goes
clickety-click, sometime the "You need to restart your computer box
comes up", sometimes nothing
happens, and occasionally it gives the flashing broken folder. I have
run disk repair several times
and it never show a problem except for the time it couldn't find the
hard disk. I the ran hardware test and it failed the hard disk. I ran
it again and everything was fine. It seems that I can reliably start up
by running hardware test and then restarting. Once the thing starts up
it works perfectly!

Honestly, I would back up everything and replace the disk ASAP.
