Noisy pbook 17"--is this normal?

Post by Sarah Feli » Fri, 05 Dec 2003 16:29:28

Just got my brand new Powerbook and I notice that every so often it looks
like the hard drive is waking up and then it makes a continuous noisy sound,
a bit of a rumbling hum, not very loud but noticeable and annoying
nonetheless. Is this normal? Or is there a way of adjusting something so
that it doesn't make this noise?

Thanks,
Sarah

Sounds more like the optical drive than hard drive. When there is no
CD/DVD in the optical drive, the computer should be nearly silent. I'm
sitting in my quiet livingroom and can't hear a thing from my 15"
PowerBook.

I think there are some noise problems, go to Apple's Support page, PB
section...

On my brand new 17", I have the fan under the left speaker that never shuts
off, running at low speed, a strong whisper, not what I want, want the book
to quite activities ( but not in sleep) to answer internet calls.

Well, that sounds like the fan to me. Did you have a specific reason
to say you thought it was the hard drive? If not, the fan is it. When
the machine gets hot enough, the fan comes on. When it cools off, the
fan goes off. Simple as that.

Could be something else, I suppose, but the fan sounds likely to me.

my fan, under the left speaker, stays on all the time, have the most recent
PB 17", Panther, the fan is on low spead, a constant whisper, not normal, no
feedback from apple yet, despite the LONG threads on Apple support pages...

I think it is a power mangagement problem, and may be corrected in future
releases of Panther, if not, well, it's hardware....

Download "Cocktail", a shareware utility. It'll bang off your harddrive
after a minute (or, whatever you desire.)

Sounds like something's very wrong with your machine?
