is there a way to have the two frameworks work on the same dev box?

The reason I ask is because I need to make sure that we make the right steps
forward to the new plateform with out disreagarding the 1.1 framework.

You can have any number of framework versions installed on the same machine.

Yes, different frameworks can be installed side-by-side. But it's important
to know how your applications will behave when run when multiple frameworks
are installed. I suggest you read this:
