Samba problem, help required.

If I do a connect to server command and browse, I can see the server I
want to connect to. I then double click it and I get a box "CONNECTION
FAILED This file server is running on your machine. Please access the
volumes and files locally" I don't understand why I am getting this
message.

If I use the smb://ip-address/share I can enter my user name and
password and the share mounts and I can drag files off the share, but
it can take 3 minutes to receive a 5mb file. Moving a file onto the
share from the OSX machine causes the finder to hang for a few seconds
and the message "A server you are using is no longer available. Do you
want to continue trying to contact it?..." If you click OK the share is
still mounted and about 60k of the file I am trying to move is on the
share. If I try to manually move the file using the smbclient from
terminal it gives me the following error "Error writing file:Call timed
out: server did not respond after 20000 milliseconds
Call timed out : Server did not respond after 20000 milliseconds
closing remote file"

I can move files to and from this share from Windows and another Linux
box. I can also successfully move files to and from OSX using smb to
and from that other Linux box, so the problem seems to be between this
Linux server and OSX (I have tried more than one OSX client all have
the same problem).

The message is quite descriptive. you are clicking on the icon FOR THE COMPUTER
YOU'RE SITTING IN FRONT OF, not the icon for the file server.

Your computer is losing the connection to the file server. How is it connected
to the file server? Are your Ethernet cables known to be good? Are you using a
hub or switch?

I am afraid neither of your statements are true. I am not clicking the
wrong icon at all, even I am not THAT stupid. And there are no problems
with my eithernet connection. This is a Samba config conflict that only
effects OSX is seems. My G5 can connect to at leat 3 other linux boixes
here but not our recently built prime server. This server has a
different version of Samba and so the smaba.conf are different.
