How do I query October 1 previous year to September 30 of the current year.

You could use the DateSerial function e.g.
DateSerial(Year-1, 10,1) is Oct-1 in the previous year.

So on 2 Jan you would only get 3 months of data or do you want the previous FY?

Try this --
Between DateSerial(Year(DateAdd("m",3,Date()))-2, 10,1) AND
DateSerial(Year(DateAdd("m",3,Date()))-1, 9, 30)
