Movie15 broken with Powerdot

Post by Doctor Smi » Fri, 08 Dec 2006 23:58:19

Hello all!

I have a presentation with the Powerdot class and it loads in a movie
with the movie15 package. When I wrote the presentation last March, it
worked perfectly, but now, after a miktex update, the movie no longer
gets included in the presentation. This is with the latest versions of
miktex and the packages on WinXP.

I've reduced it to a minimal case:

\documentclass{powerdot}
\usepackage{movie15}
\begin{document}
\begin{slide}{test}
\includemovie{5cm}{5cm}{applegrowth.avi}
\end{slide}
\end{document}

It seems that contents of the last argument in the includemovie command
are simply now ignored when the powerdot class is used. I can put
anything there, and all I get is a blank space in the specified size.
I haven't been able to find a magic set of options that make it work
either. Evidently, one of the package updates in the last eight months
broke something, but I can't figure out what it might be.

Any help on this is muchly appreciated!

Powerdot didn't have an update and movie15 did. The problems have been found
before and are discussed on the mailinglist:

This is not a solution and not even a workaround. The advice
should be: until the problem in movie15 is solved, unfortunately,
it doesn't work on overlays, so don't put your movies on overlays.

It does! But not on the first one of a slide.

This is not enough. You _must_ say \begin{slide}[method=direct]{...}
on slides with movies.

Thanks! that solved the problem neatly.

Though, it would be nice if this bug and workaround were included in
the powerdot documentation.

No, no. As Hendri stated, movie15 ist the culprit. No bug in powerdot,
but in movie15. I try to modify movie15 such that it can be used on
overlays not just flat slides.

Sorry, I wasn't implying a particular fault to either package. I just
like to see helpful information about the known problems. I should
amend my previous comment to state that this be listed in the
documentation of both packages.

this isn't a blame game. But, a note in the PDF doc or the README to
state there's a problem (be it a bug, conflict, or preordained karmic
retribution) and workaround available would be very helpful.

And since it seems that I have the attention of the people working on
these packages, thanks! These are two very useful packages, and I'm
quite happy to have them.

Listing bugs that are about to be solved in the docs isn't very useful as
it is rather stationary, gets in all distributions etcetera and by the time
someone reads it, the bug might be solved for ages already. There is a
mailinglist for powerdot that can be used to search for known and
reported bugs and the solution or workaround. As I mentioned before,
the discussion about this particular bug is also held there.
