Custom/override table (float) number: how to make a top-level table with number "1a"?

Can anyone tell me the easiest way to make a table with a custom
number?
If I \setcounter{table}{1a} I get a table "2". How do I make it
"1a"?

(Sadly I only need to do this because the tables are an appendix to
someone's non-latex file wihtout dynamic references, and we want to
squeeze in a table...)

Thanks!!

For this purpose, I will suggest avoiding the \caption command
entirely, and entering the table title by hand in a format that looks
like
the rest of the non-LaTeX book.
