cross-posted

clicking on the file downloaded from sun gives this error dialog:
cannot open jre-1_5_0-beta2-linux-i586-rpm.bin the filename indicates the
file is of type "unknown type." the contents of the file indicate the
file is of type "(null)".

the command line:
$rpm -vhi jre-1_5_0-beta2-linux-i586-rpm.bin
jre-1_5_0-beta2-linux-i586-rpm.bin: not an rpm package (or package manifest):

not quite sure what the problem is...a setting? or my computer's missing
a file to make this work? from Gnome in redhat FC2. I've downloaded it a
few times from mozilla.

java jre rpm gives "not an rpm package" error

Post by Jaco » Fri, 13 Aug 2004 16:26:48

On Thu, 12 Aug 2004 06:23:42 GMT, a posting issued forth from XXXX@XXXXX.COM ...

Try "file jre-1_5_0-beta2-linux-i586.rpm.bin". It should be a shell
script (as indicated by the .bin extension). Try

sh jre-1_5_0-beta2-linux-i586.rpm.bin

man file

"file" is your friend...

It's just not an rpm.

manifest):

".bin" means it's a binary. For reasons I have never understood, Sun insists
on rebundling their .rpm's in their own little silly packaging format. You
have to execute the file to extract the .rpm.

make the bin file executable:
$ chmod +x jre-1_5_0-beta2-linux-i586-rpm.bin

and then execute it:
$ ./jre-1_5_0-beta2-linux-i586-rpm.bin

It will present you some kind of license agreement, and will produce a real
rpm file.
