links that begin "www" don't work, those beginning with "http" do

Recently clicks on links in Outlook emails that begin with "www" go to
whatever page is set as my homepage (Google), but if the link begins with
"http" it goes properly to the linked webpage.

32-bit IE8 is the browser I use. It is set as the default browser and is
associated with HTTP. The default browser for html and htm files is also
32-bit IE8

I run 64-bit Vista and have 64-bit IE8, but it isn't associated with any
file type or protocol.

Anyone familiar with this problem who knows how to fix it?

Thanks

www is not a valid Internet protocol, so it is not a valid hyperlink.

Some email clients automatically create a valid hyperlink (http://...)
if anything looks like a URL, but there is no guarantee for that.

I.e. google.com is not a hyperlink, but http://www.yqcomputer.com/
