Formatting toolbar and list option missing

The Formatting toolbar has disappeared from Outlook's main screen and when
creating new messages. The Formatting toolbar does not appear in the list of
toolbars to reset either. Any ideas on how to get it back?

What version of Outlook are we talink about here?
In what format are you composing? HTML, Plain Text or Rich Text?
Are you using Word or Outlook as your e-mail editor?

We use Outlook 2002.
Messages are composed in Rich Text.
Outlook is the email editor.

With Outlook closed, try renaming or deleting the file
%AppData%\Microsoft\Outloko\outcmd.dat then restart Outlook.

I renamed the outcmd.dat file located in the user's profile. Although
outcmd.dat was not re-created, this solution worked perfectly! Thank you!

You're welcome, but I have a problem with outcmd.dat not being recreated.
If I were in the user's shoes, I'd create a new mail profile.

I am having the same problem, however am using Outlook Express 06, I cannot
locate the file outcmd.dat. Is there another way of locating it other than
in search or an alternate solution?

Outlook Express doesn't use the outcmd.dat file. This newsgroup is for
Outlook, not Outlook Express.

With the Compose window open, right-click the toolbar and put a check by
Formatting.

It's in the (hidden) folder %AppData%\Microsoft\Outlook.

Thank you so much, I futzed around with this for days before looking to the
forum for help. Renaming the file in Outlook 2003, as you suggested, fixed
the problem - thanks!!

I tried renaming the outcmd.dat file and restarted Outlook with no success.
I next deleted the file and restarted Outlook same thing, No Joy! The file
did recreate when Outlook was restarted. What can I try next? Where did the
format toolbar go? Was it an update from HP/Microsoft as I read in another
posting?

XP SP3... outcmd.dat for me is in C:\Documents and
Settings\HP_Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook -- %App% etc got
a cannot locate, check hard drive, etc. pop-up...

I see Format Choices in New Message but cannot Get Format to Stay Checked
FOR Contacts Note Body. Renaming .dat to whodat did no good but was fun - Go
Saints!. Is my issue the same solution - ordinarily? Also, outcmd.dat was
13.5 MB and after re-name is 10kb. Is that the way it should work? MANY
THANKS!
