links that begin "www" don't work, those beginning with "http"

Thank you.

Still, my copy of Outlook 2003 for five years has been (and I assume yours
is still) able to direct Internet Explorer (now IE8 SP1) to the correct
webpage by clicking on a link that begins with www (like www.google.com).

In fact, the problem could be with either Outlook or IE8 (or something
else), but something must have changed that presently prevents Outlook from
dealing as adroitly with links now as it did until recently.

Any idea what that could be?

Thanks.

Is that for incoming messages? Are these messages plain text or HTML?

If you check messages that arrived before the behavior changed, do these
also no longer present clickable hyperlinks?

Thanks for replying Pat,

Correct, the problem with links beginning with "www" is in incoming mail.

The messages are plain text, and I've just checked messages that arrived
before the behavior changed and these links, which used to work, no longer
work as clickable hypertext links.

Ok, that confirms that it is not the messages themselves, but Outlook
and/or IE8.

I have just tested on my system - sending a plain text message
containing www.microsoft.com to Outlook 2003, and it does arrive with a
clickable hyperlink. I also have IE8, but it opens in my default browser
Firefox.

So I do not know how you lost this capability. Can you try to uninstall
IE8 ( http://www.yqcomputer.com/ ), and see if this changes
anything?

i Pat,

I uninstalled IE8 (the default browser then becoming 32-bit IE7)
and, after testing, found that nothing had happened to the dysfunctional
links beginning with "www;" they still don't link to the appropriate
webpages. After reviewing and following the procedure, especially for
backing up and setting up user accounts, I'll try uninstalling and
reinstalling Outlook and see if that has any effect.

Do you have any other ideas of what else I might try?

Thanks,

Elias

don't think reinstalling Outlook will change anything, but if you are
desperate enough, try it anyway.

No more ideas, short of doing a System Restore to the time before the
problem started. But since you did many things since then, including
installing and uninstalling IE8, that may leave you in a pretty mess!
