With the correct mx records and recipient policy!
If you mean some sort of replication/cluster between their mail
server and this one, thats a whole other issue.

I manage a small site that uses Exchange Server 2000 and have a friend who
alos does the same thing. I want to know how to configure my Exchange server
to receive mail for his domain when his server is down and my Exchange
Server to forward all his mails to him when he is back online. I appreciate
we will have to add each others servers as MX records in DNS with a higher
weighting than the default server.

I realise that I could configure my Exchange server accept mails for his
domain but emails sent to his domain whilst his server is down will bounce
back with an NDR "No such user at this organisation" as I do not have his
users in Active Directory.

Also, My Exhange Server needs to poll his server regurlarly and send out all
his messages when he is online again.

I would suggest that you drop this plan. This is not something that
Exchange does very well and there arent any built-in capabilities for
this. Think about either having your ISP as the secondary store and
forward MX record, or contact a company such as

I would setup a Postfix on FreeBSD server, personally, but you can install Postfix on many platforms. Out the Postfix mail server logically in front of the Exchange Server and set it up as backup MX.
