Can't Playback Video on Windows Media Player 8.0 for Pocket PC

Post by TV9GTEVNSU » Sun, 22 Jan 2006 05:22:01

I have an old Compaq Ipaq 3835 running Windows Mobile 2002 and Windows Media
Player 8.0 for Pocket PC. I am having difficulty playing back .wmv files on
my pocket pc. Any suggestions?

Check the codecs used in the files. If they are using the WMA9/WMV9
codecs, those are not supported by Pocket PC WMP 8.0.

You can check the codec by opening the file in your desktop WMP, then
clicking File Menu->Properties

How do I adjust the codecs settings or can I download new codecs settings?

You can't, I'm afraid. Pocket WMP is limited to the codecs it
internally supports, unlike the desktop version you can't install
additional codecs.

You could upgrade your iPAQ to Windows Mobile 2003, which will give
you WMP9, and therefore support for the Windows Media 9 codecs. That
is the only option if you must have WM9 support.

Alternatively you can reencode the files to a codec your PPC can deal
with. Use PocketDivXEncoder to convert the files to DivX/AVI format,
and play them back with TCPMP, both programs are free.

^^ Point of order ;-)

The manufacturer of the device ROM is entitled to supply additional
codecs with the player and they can be used - but they can't be
installed by the user, is I think the scenario.
