will SPs break new WSS templates at SPS level?

Greetings,

I want to create a personalized team web site template or defination. I've
read both ways - the template way is easy, and finishes with the stsadm.exe
command, and the new template appears for when you are at the portal and
creating a new top level site.

But I am worried that upgrades and service packs may overwrite that import I
just did with the newly created templates. So I like the idea of
definations, (in their separate subdirectories).

But there seems no easy way to get the defination modified first. Most
articles say copy an existing one (say STS), and that works fine. Howver,
HOW can I modify it (the copy of STS) to have our company personalization
(like with a graphic - easy to do in templates), so the modified one will
then be available for all top level created sites?

Make sense? Thanks. Bill

To modify the template you will need to have a good understanding of CAML,
HTML, and how the underlying web parts work. What I usually do is to
create the web site and modify it in FrontPage until I get it to look like I
want it to. Then I look at the code and translate it into the code the
template needs.

You will find that some parts are a lot easier than others ;) This MSDN
article provides a good start:

Thank you so much for answering!

But I'm confused. We have templates and definations. The template is easy
for me to do, as I'm just doing some basic stuff - adding a couple graphics,
etc., then save as a template, export to a file. But then I use stsadm.exe.
So I am worried that the template is now "integrated" with SPS. Will a SP or
upgrade ruin this???

Conversely, the definations can be put in a separate directory, with a
separate webtemp*.xml document, so I like that. But it's beyond my current
capability to figure how to edit (easily) the STS files to get my basic
graphics in, etc.

Thanks very much for helping me! Bill

I have not heard of a SP overwriting a custom template unless it had
overwritten one that comes with SPS.
