How to Migrate SPS 2003 Sites to WSS 2.0

Hello,

My client is getting rid of their SPS 2003 installation and is wanting
to move all of their sites to WSS 2.0. Whats the best way to do this
and can I keep the permissions intact? I have heard smigrate will
work, but the permissions will be lost. Is this the best way to do
this? Is it the only way to do this? Looking for some help, thank
you.

It might well not be as easy as it sounds. Going from WSS 2.0 to SPS 2003
via for instance smigrate is possible because standalone WSS 2.0 is to some
degree a "sub-set" of the WSS part of SPS 2003. The other direction and it
may get tricky if a particular list is using something that only SPS 2003
has.

The three usual transfer options are Save List as Template / Use Template
(10MB limit; loses permissions anyway); smigrate (loses permissions); stsadm
(investigate yourself).

I've usually used smigrate and re-specified permissions.

However in this case you might be forced to create the lists in WSS 2.0 and
transfer the data manually (because of going down from SPS 2003 to WSS 2.0).

This is helpful, thanks Mike. What we'll probably do is use smigrate,
and just setup permissions again. That way its done from a command
prompt and its quick. This client has 100's of sites, so I was just
looking for the quickest method.
