List Template Compatibility Between Sharepoint 2.0 & Sharepoint 3.0

List Template Compatibility Between Sharepoint 2.0 & Sharepoint 3.0

I have, like many, created some sharepoint lists in sharepoint 2.0
which I'd like to transfer to the 3.0 platform. I have tried to save
the list (with content) as a template in hopes of transfering it to
the 3.0 List Template Gallery and then creating a new list from that
template but have not been succesfull in doing so.

Can anyone help me work around this or is there an easier way to
transfer these lists from 2.0 to 3.0 while including the existing
content? I have a minimum of about 5 lists that I'd like to transfer
(with existing content) so really I'm not to concerned with
transfering them in a more manual fashion that may require addressing
them one at a time.

Thanks in advance to everyone who provides me with feedback!

Well you can't do it the way you've tried.

If you want a certain way that will work with all list types, then upgrade
your WSS 2.0 installation to WSS 3.0. You'll be able to Save List as
Template for all lists and use those templates n your other WSS 3.0
installation. (or you could use stsadm)

Otherwise depending on the list type, experiment with in 2.0 saving to Excel
and then getting back thedata from Excel in 3.0. With document libraries,
copy the documents acrosss (Explorer View to Explorer View) and then copy
the metadata across (Datasheet View to Datasheet Vw). That's one
possiblity

List Template Compatibility Between Sharepoint 2.0 & Sharepoint 3.0

Thanks for the input Mike. Since I have already upgraded to SharePoint
3.0 will the stsadm method still work? It sounds like that would be
the best way to go since I want to keep the list structure and
settings in place along with the data they contain.

Also, just this morning I found "Upgrade Toolkit for Windows
SharePoint Services Sites and Templates Guide" on Microsoft's website.
Anything about this that won't help me accomplish the above? Is this a
tool that you would recommend?

You can use stsadm to move from v3 to v3. Not afaik from v2 to v3. (I'm not
sure which of the two you were asking about)

By all means check out the Toollkit. My impression was that it was to solve
a different problem (to transfer of lists).
