Grant non-admins certain permissions

Grant non-admins certain permissions

In SMS 2003, is it possible to grant non-admins (helpdesk for example)
certain permissions to collections, packages, adverti *** ts, etc.?

Is it just a matter of giving them permissions through Security Rights?
Will they require local admins to the server or login to the SMS server to
access the console. Or can the console be installed on their desktop?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, it is possible. Install the console on their desktop. On the server,
add them (or a group they belong to) to the local group SMS Admins, and via
Security Rights you grant them (or a group they belong to) to the class(es)
or specific instances you want them to have access to.

Depending upon local firewall on the desktop, or settings on the server, you
may need to troubleshoot / adjust settings if you find that the console
doesn't connect.

If you are just looking to give the helpdesk remote control abilities, there
are other tools available instead of the console (just thought I'd throw that
out there).

Thanks Sherry.

I installed the console on the desktop and now I'm getting a connection
failed: \\server\root\sms\site

I found an article that talks about changing the DCOM settings by allowing
remote activation and launch on both SQL and SMS servers. But I'm still
having trouble connecting.

Any ideas?
