Redistributing DTS

Hi All,

I've got the "Redistributing DTS with your program" (from:
http://www.yqcomputer.com/ ,105,225,0,1 - thanks Darren) printed
out and in front of me.

A couple of questions:

1. Is the ApplicationDirectory the root folder of "my" application? For
example... "C:\Program Files\FredsDTSApp"?

2. If the answer to #1 is "Yes", then what might happen if I register DLLs
that are already on the system (in the ApplicationDirectory or Windows
System folder(s)) in the case where MSSQL Client Tools are already
installed?

To sum it up:
I'm concerned of the possibility of messing up our clients MSSQL server
installation (who wouldn't - right?). I will outwardly admit that I'm not
familiar enough with the registry and registering duplicate files on the
same machine located in different folders to go for it with blind faith (not
knowing what could potentially occur and this is the place to ask)!

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards - Fred

Strictly speaking the path should be the same as that used by SQL server,
otherwise this can cause problems. Unfortunately there is no way of
guaranteeing that all tools do this properly and you can still get problems.

I would do a check in your installer to see if SQL is installed. or not and
if so then do not try and re-install any of the SQL stuff. You can do a
simple reg key check, although there is probably an official method of doing
this.

The wy to look at this article is that these dlls/rlls should be placed in
the exact same folder as they would have been had you installed SQL Server.
Have a look at an installation of SQL Server and find out the locations.
You can then create the directory structure from there.

It will work using the application's directory but if you subsequently
install SQL Server on the machine then entries in the registry can get a
liitle out of whack.

Hi Darren and Allan,

My worries were confirmed and my questions answered. Thanks!

I'm open to any ways to help me check for SQL installs/locations on target
machines (I'm using InstallShield Express v3.5x) so if anyone following
these threads has any input, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks to all!

Kind regards - Fred
