Configure MSDE to be available on internet?

Post by Tom » Mon, 06 Nov 2006 00:29:26

Hello,

I'd like to configure a MSDE SQL server we're using to be available on
the internet. I allowed 1434 (udp) through the firewall, as well as
1433 (tcp). I set the MSDE server to port 1433 and verified it was
accessible inside the LAN. I also verified you could telnet to port
1433 from the internet, it seems that the firewall is set correctly. I
set my application's Data Source portion of the connection string to
read "<internet server>\<dbname>" but it fails saying the database
server doesn't exist or cant be contacted.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tom

hi Tom,

why "<internet server>\<dbname>"?
the instance name is composed by the computer name (only) for a default
instance, and ComputerName\InstanceName for a named instance...

I hope that you have applied ALL service packs and security patches to MSDE
before opening to the internet.

Yes, allways keep updated. Besides the firewall will only let certain
IP's access the port.

Yes but you cannot define the database in the datasource. For this you have
parameter "initial catalog". So your connection string should look like:
...; Data Source=<server>; Initial Catalog=<database>; ... or
...; Data Source=<server>\<instance>; Initial Catalog=<database>; ...

Actually, the application created the connect string and it is editable
in a INI file. During install it asks for server name and then it
creates the string as I mentioned. It works fine internally on the
LAN.

I think it's just using the 2nd one.. there are multiple SQL servers
running on the SBS server.
