two instances of sqlservr.exe running

Post by Chris A » Tue, 20 Jun 2006 17:21:12

Hello, I am running windows 2003 with MS SQL Server 2005 Express
Edition. I have noticed that there are two instances of sqlservr.exe
running and there is only one installation of sql server. I performed a
file search for sqlservr.exe and there is only one which resides in the
sql setup folder. When I stop the service one of the sqlservr.exe
instances remain active.. Is this normal?

Hi Chris

How are you seeing the two instances? If you use NET START does it show more
than one?

Hi Chris

Are you logged on to the server via Remote Desktop? In that case it
could be that another session is running on the server, and this session
has sqlserver.exe running.
You can check this by going the Administrative Tools -> Terminal
Services Manager to see if other sessions is running. YOu can also try
to log on to the console of the server and then check if more than 2
instances of sqlserver is running.

Hi Chris

I can't see the bitmap with the online newsgroup, but at a guess this is an
MSDE/SQLExpress instance that attaches the database files.

When it is running do you get different information back from a NET START?

Hello, Thanks John and S *** .

The screenshot is of the Task Manager, under the Processes tab I am
seeing the two sqlservr.exe instances running. As I said earlier, when
the PC is just started, only one sqlservr.exe runs, which is idle and
won't use more than 600KB of memory. Then, when I run DotNetNuke which
connects to a SQL database in the app_data folder of the web
application, the second instance of sqlservr.exe starts and uses up to
27 MB of memory, the other sqlservr.exe uses up to 8 MB at this point
and then reduces the load down to 600 KB.

I checked Terminal Services, only my session is shown, this is my
personal PC so it's impossible that other people are logged in.

NET start at the command prompt shows the sql server express service and
the sql writer service.

sql server management studio shows only one instance of the server.

Hi

http://www.yqcomputer.com/
describes how a user instance is created, if you application does this then I
think it will be the additional process that you see.
