I will be doing development work and testing on Sql Server 2005 and Sql
Server 2005 Express.
What is the best installation for my requirement?
Is it possible to install both on the same machine?

Yes, You can install both versions on the same machine.
By default the express version will have the instance name SQLEXPRESS.

setup your development environment as close
as possible to the production environment.

I'm attempting to install visual studio 2005 on a machine running XP media
edition. Previous installation attempts, 3, stalled at the SQL server
express installation. I followed guidelines from Microsoft for uninstalling
the VS 2005 express editions and also downloaded an app to identify remaining
components to uninstall prior to reinstalling VS 2005. The current install
appears to have stalled again with the progress bar at max with the message,
" current component is installing. Anyone have an idea. It doesn't error,
this never seems to finish. Not sure what to do. Reinstall OS?
I'm posting this as I have not found similar posts on this issue yet.

Try installing VS without SQL Express and then installing SQL Express
separately so you can see what is going on.
