sql server 2005 setup fails at the step of starting the sql server

Post by Philippe » Mon, 15 Jan 2007 10:58:04

Hi,
After making good progress, the setup fails in "Configuring Components" of
Sql Server Services phase during the "Configuring MS Sql Server" step.
The error is: The sql server service failed to start (The error is (1067)
The process terminated unexpectedly). Options are Retry and Cancel. The
first fails, the second causes the setup to Rollback all actions undoing all
its hard work; but closing the error dialog box causes to roll back only the
failed phase. SSAS, SSIS, Browser and SS Vss Writer have been installed and
running.
The Error Log file shows:
Error: 17311, Severity: 16, State: 1.
SQL Server is terminating because of fatal exception c000001d. This error
may be caused by an unhandled Win32 or C++ exception, or by an access
violation encountered during exception handling. Check the SQL error log for
any related stack dumps or messages. This exception forces SQL Server to
shutdown. To recover from this error, restart the server (unless SQLAgent is
configured to auto restart).
This was my second (or 3rd) attempt at installing sql server., Any ideas on
how to resolve this issue?
Thanks

This KB article describes exactly the error message which you
receive. Are you trying to install Express edition?

919392 - Error message when you try to install SQL Server 2005
Express Edition or SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced
Services: "Server SQL Server is terminating because of fatal
exception c000001d"

Hi Vera,
I was trying the Entreprise Evaluation version and not the Express edition;
and the CPU on the box is not one of the 2 mentioned by the KB arcticle (The
affected CPUs include VIA Eden CPUs and Transmeta CPUs.)
my box has an AMD-k6 at 450 MHz, and 512 MB of RAM. Sure it is not a fancy
box, I hope I still can install 2005 on it.
The other possible cause mentioned by the KB is a corrupt media, that is the
sql 2005 DVD. I will retry the setup again using another DVD. It would be
too bad if it fails again :-)
Thanks

I believe the minimum CPU speed for SQL Server 2005 Enterprise is
600MHz. The error message doesn't seem to say that is the cause of
your problem but it's a pretty low spec box these days.

Recommended speed is 1GHz+.

hank you Andrew,

one has to note that the Warning for the CPU having less then the required
600 MHz should be an Error instead of a Warning, because it causes the set
up to fail - concistently !
