ex5.5 to ex2003 Migration problem

Post by Roge » Fri, 23 Jul 2004 05:24:55

All,
I have recently added an E2K3 server into my ex5.5 site in hopes to get all
mail over to the server. All of the prep utilities ran pretty much
flwalessly and without error. ADC verify comes out clean as well. There
are no DNS or name resolution issues whatsoever. 2000 domain is still in
mixed mode...BUT...

In ex5.5 system manager, I can see the new 2003 server. In ESM for 2003,
the ex 5.5 server is not there. Additionally, I am logging 9175 errors in
the app log every minute ("openmsgstore failed"). The information store is
started and running, and the mailbox store is mounted. I know that it is
some kind of issue with the SA, but I have tried everithing I can think of
(checking SA mailbox rights, etc). I am at a loss as to how to pinpoint
this. Nothing is being replicated from my 5.5 over to the EX2003, even
though everything seemed to be set up correctly! Is there a step by step
method to verify the SA acct is working proerly, and the the SRS service and
ADC are functioning correctly as well? TIA...

Roger

suspect that something went wrong during your installation and the E2k3
server does not believe it is in a mixed mode Admin Group. But parts of the
install believe they are in mixed mode. Hence the 9175, the SA is probably
trying to open the store using the 5.5 Service Account but is failing.

If you have nothing invested in this server ( no mailboxes, public folders,
etc ) I would suggest the removing and reinstall the E2k3 server. It will
probably take as long to troubleshoot and fix your current installation as
to start again. Hopefully the result will be better then your last install.
1. Uninstall the Exchange 2003 server, just run setup like you did before
and select uninstall
2. Open 5.5 Administrator, If the E2k3 Server is still present in the 5.5
directory delete it.
3. Start again to install the E2k3 Server. You probably will need to re-run
Forestprep and DomainPrep, and I would recommend re-running the tools to
make sure everything is still OK. Since you have been through these steps
once it should go quicker.

If you want to try and troubleshoot the current install:
1. For starters find out if your SRS is installed Correctly. Open ESM and
at the bottom there is a section called tools that should have a container
called SRS. See if your new E2k3 server is listed as an SRS here. Also
open up ADC Admin, and see if there is a connection agreement called a
Config_CA.

2. If you see both of these things, make sure the SRS service is running on
the E2k3 server. Open Exchange 5.5 Administrator, but connect to the E2k3
Server instead of the 5.5 server ( File -> Connect I believe). See if E2k3
SRS directory contains both the 5.5 server and the E2k3 Server.

3. Make sure the ADC Service is running. Check the Application Eventlog
on the ADC server for any errors or warnings from the ADC Service.

4. Open ESM on the E2k3 server. Open the properties of your Administration
Group. You should see a Box containing the name of your 5.5 Service
Account. I can't remember what ESM calls it. Anyway, try to re-type the
password for the 5.5 Service Account here. wait a few minutes then try
restarting the System Attendant and all the dependent services (Store, MTA)
on the E2k3 Server.

ex5.5 to ex2003 Migration problem

Post by roge » Sat, 24 Jul 2004 04:01:13

teven,
Thanks for the help, but to no avail...I reinstalled today with the
exact same results. To answer some of your questions:

No, my Ex2k3 server is not listed in the SRS conatiner.
Yes, I do ave a CA in the ADC..I am not getting any errors from the
ADC.

When I go into 5.5 and open up the e2k3 server, I do not see any srs
directory.

In effect, my windows AD doesn't have a clue that the 5.5 world
exists! I am at my withs end fighting with this for the last 4 days.
Again, something tells me that it must be an authentication or
communications issue. My 9175 error shave the code
80040011d-0526-00000000. Is there a way to test/configure the SRS or
the CA agreement? I wonder if this is where my problem is?

he only way to get an SRS is really to have the E2k3 Join the 5.5 server
when you install. So if you don't have one now then we need to figure out
how to get your install to create one.

Is your Server part of a larger organization or do you only have the two
servers (5.5 and Exchange 2003) ? If it is a stand alone (and I mean the
only 2 server any where are the 1 5.5 server and the 1 E2k3 server) then I
can give you the steps. If there are other E2k3 Servers (part of a larger
Organization) then the steps become a bit more complex, you can email at
XXXX@XXXXX.COM and I can work out the steps with you.

If it is a stand alone do the following:

1. Uninstall the E2k3 Server (again)
2. Delete any reference to the E2k3 server in the 5.5 Directory using 5.5
Administrator
3. From the E2k3 CD, run "Setup /RemoveOrg". This will remove the Exchange
Org data from your AD, so this has to be your only install.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830185&Product=exch2003
4. Now Wait a short time, like an hour per Domain Controller.
5. Run Exchange 2003 Setup /ForestPrep
6. Run Exchange 2003 Setup /DomainPrep
7. Run Install of the Exchange Server 2003, setup should ask if you want to
create a new Organization or Join the 5.5 Organization.

teven,
The SRS tool is listed, it just doesn't have any servers in it..someone
recommended creating a new SRS (leaving this install intact).

One of the problems I might be having is replication amoung DCs. Some of
them are located over slow WAN links (even though we are all in one site
(not my design). I wonder if this has anything to do with it? During
setup, I use a command to specifiy a DC, but in the log I see that setup is
communicating with some of the other DCs that are over the slow links...

I appreciate all of your help.

o you don't have an SRS, which means your Exchange 2003 server is not
replicating with the 5.5 server. The DC's could be the problem, setup might
be finding stale data in another DC and setup's logic would decide not to
install an SRS.

There isn't really a good way to get the two talking at this point. I'd be
worried that any messing about with the Servers would result in problems for
you later on. I'd recommend cleaning up and starting again still. Do you
have multiple Exchange 2003 servers or just the one?

If you have just the one, I think you'ld be best off running the uninstall
then RemoveOrg Switch. Then waiting for that to replicate to all your DCs
in your forest. This way when setup runs it won't find stale data in
another DC. You could monitor the replication to the remote DCs using a
tool like ADSIEdit, LDP.exe, to view the Exchange Org object directly being
removed. Or a tool like dsastat
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318340&Product=win2
000).

teven,
Thanks...my plan of attck is doing the uninstall and /removeorg (don on
Friday), running forest prep and domain prep tomorrow, then waiting a day to
do the install..This way I can be sure that everything gets replicated.
During the last several installs, I ran setup right after forest prep and
domain prep, and if setup was looking to a DC that didn't have the
appropriate info, that could have been my problem. Even though I forced
replication in AD sites and services, I worry that some things just weren't
replicated. If this fails, I will have to buck up for a call to
Msoft...thanks again.
