VS2005 Remote Debug on WinXP Home

Post by David Chin » Tue, 05 Dec 2006 23:17:26

When I start MSVCMON (as administrator) on a WinXP Home PC, I get the
"Visual Studio Remote Debugging Monitor will not be able to debug
applications because the "Network access: Sharing and security model for
local acccounts" local security policy option is set to 'Guest Only - local
users authenticate as guest" etc...

The problem is, WinXP Home does not have the Local Security Policy applet in
the Control Panel/Administrator Tools folder like WinXP Pro does. So how do
I set this option appropriately so that I can remote debug?

I have not yet found a solution to this. Please tell me Microsoft did not
release a remote de *** that does not work with a supported and current
OS: XP Home. Any comments?

FYI, I have submitted a bug on Microsoft Connect about this:

Having read this post a few hours ago, I carried on searching. I can't
believe more people haven't had this error.

I have a XP Pro server running IIS and msvsmon running (which incidentally
can see the debug requests coming in), but my XP Home machine hosting VS2005
then refuses giving the 'use the Local Security Settings' message (which
doesn't exist on XP Home).

However, Microsofts feedback is contradictory: Firstly, there is the
feedback to this very post which implies it's not possible.

This also implies you need XP Pro:

But this implies you can use XP Home (any edition):

I've just about given up and decided to install Pro on my Home machine. I'm
just so surprised there's so few people wanting to do this.

I'm sorry to hear that the documentation is contradictory. I know this is not an answer to your
question, but I'd like to assert that you'll be better off in many ways (besides this one) if you
just bite the bullet and go Pro. XP Home was meant for less sophisticated users upgrading from
Win95/98/ME, although it's far superior to any of those DOS-based pseudo-OS's. So, don't be so
surprised that you don't encounter many others wanting to do what you're doing. Just the fact that
you're debugging at all, let alone trying to do it remotely in conjunction with IIS, means that
you're too sophisticated to stick with XP Home.
