Server restarts

Post by Peter » Thu, 09 Sep 2004 22:38:29

Hi Guys,

Have a stranghe situation with one of my customers. They
have a win2k server (Non DC) prividing file and print
services. Once every couple of weeks the server restarts
for no aparrent reason.

It is in a controlled computer room and on UPS. UPS logs
indiccate no power outages. Below is the only significant
event found in the event logs. Other events are info only
indicating print jobs being submitted. I wonder if anyone
from Microsoft reviews this newsgroup and would
appreciate it if they could comment on the evnt ID
outlined below. Does the binary in the event give any
clues as to why this happens.

If no BSOD's occur (Event ID: 1001 Source: Save Dump), then it may be a
power problem. I would look at a possible faulty (or undersized) pc power
supply, UPS, bad battery, or the circuit feeding the outlet that the pc is
plugged into.

Server restarts

In addition to Dave Patrick's suggestions -

If there is any perceptible pattern of regularity to this, you might
also consider power transients caused by activities elsewhere in the
environment - such as generator tests and scheduled power-downs for
purposes unrelated to anything going on in the machine room. Could even
be some sort of maintenance outside the building.

There was an extensive discussion of a similar problem in one of these
NGs a couple years ago, about a machine at Columbia U in Manhattan. As I
recall, the problem was ultimately discovered to be a rather unusual
circumstance involving a particular software configuration - not a power
problem. The software, however, was all "vanilla" - normal stuff. Just a
very unusual set of conditions resulting in a fairly regular server reset.
