Power options / battery meter display incorrect power remaining

I have done a fresh installation of Windows 2000 Professional on a Sony Vaio
PCGN505VE notebook. The standard Windows power management utilities give a
low battery alarm after only 10-15 minutes of use. I have installed the Sony
Power panel and battery monitor and they give the correct level for the
battery. This has left me with a duplicate battery indicator in the tray
(standard Windows 2K) that reports wrong information. Does anyone no how to
correct or disable the standard Win2K tray icon?

Control panel > power > advanced > uncheck "allways show icon on taskbar"
